2023

Competition

The 2023 Bassoon Chamber Music Composition Competition (BCMCC) is open for pieces written for bassoon alone that are single or multi-movement between 8 and 12 minutes in total duration. The winning work will be used in one or more rounds of the 2025 Meg Quigley Vivaldi Competition. Depending on performance time constraints it is possible that only certain movements or sections may be used. Part of the mission of Meg Quigley is to provide an international competition of the highest caliber for young bassoonists in the Americas who are cis women, trans women, or non-binary individuals who are comfortable in a space that centers around the experiences of women. Visit megquigley.org for more information.

Compositions from around the world are welcome for the 2023 BCMCC competition and all composers are welcome to apply, especially those that align with the mission of Meg Quigley.

JUDGES

Judges for the 2023 Solo Competition will be announced soon!

Although the Board of the BCMCC works to develop the guidelines for and promote the competition to ensure its success, BCMCC board members are not the primary judges of the competition proper. A single board member may sometimes be included on a diverse judging panel that typically includes bassoonists, composers, and other expert musicians. Take a look at our Judges page for a list of judges from past competition years!

The 2023 Winning Composition will receive the following prizes:

  • Workshopping of the piece via email, Zoom and/or some other means of communication.

  • The name of the work and bio of the composer will be listed on the BCMCC website.

  • The winning piece will receive a minimum of three premiere performances by professional bassoonists from the BCMCC board within a year of the winning announcement. Recordings of these premieres will be sent to the composer.

  • Publication of the work through Imagine Music Publishing: The publishing agreement for the winning piece will be worked out between Imagine and the winning composer, including royalties earned from each score sold to be paid semi-annually. The piece will be available for sale by February/March, 2024.

  • The winning work will be a required piece for the prestigious 2025 Meg Quigley Vivaldi Competition

    • As a result, this winning piece will be purchased and played by young bassoonists all over the Americas. The Meg Quigley Vivaldi Competition is open to all cis and trans women, as well as non-binary people comfortable in spaces that center the experiences of women who are citizens of the Americas (North America, Central America, South America), or who are enrolled in school in the Americas during the year prior to the competition and who will not have reached their 26th birthday by the competition in January of 2025. Visit megquigley.org for more information.

    • The winning work will be used in one or more rounds of the competition. Depending on performance time constraints it is possible that only certain movements or sections may be used.

    • Previous Meg Quigley Vivaldi Competitions have featured repertoire by composers HyeKyung Lee, Nancy Galbraith, Libby Larsen, Margi Griebling-Haigh, Jenni Brandon, Noelia Escalzo, Reena Esmail, Adolphus Hailstork, and Katherine Hoover.

2023 Honorable Mention winners will be listed on the BCMCC website and social media. They will also be given the opportunity to include a recording of their work on the BCMCC website pending Board approval.
